Collage…

A single found image can be a powerful tool; it can trigger a spark of life in the subconscious mind that can rapidly lead the artist on a seemingly random & hypnotic journey of discovery & creation. Similarly a collection of images assembled on canvas, in an apparently alien environment can easily ignite the viewer’s imagination and lead them into a myriad of thoughts & interpretations… These thoughts & theories form the basis of my recent body of collage/mixed media canvasses.

I like to create my work ‘instinctively’ without really having a finished idea in my head before I start. Working this way, especially with collage, gives me more freedom to let the work find it’s own way to the finishing line. I will usually begin by collecting images (a lot of) which will then be severely edited down. I’ll then decide, by looking at the images I’ve got, how to best use them.  Some I’ll draw, some I’ll scale up or down, some I’ll rip and some I’ll simply use as they are. The canvas is coloured using a combination of washed oil paint & coloured tissue. The final image is then layered & assembled.
