Sculpture…

My sculptural work originates from an interest in organic structure, but is not intended to exactly represent or mimic specific natural forms. This may indeed happen; if it does then so be it. I am fully aware that links and associations will inevitably be made.

Initial investigation looked at apparently random organic structures. Closer examination however revealed that far from being random, many organic forms are in fact governed by very precise mathematical formulae. The same mathematics is found with surprising frequency in nature, notably in the patterns of plant growth, flower petal arrangements, seashells and in the ratio between planetary orbits.
The mathematics is then taken and used as a building block in the work’s construction. It is intended for the work to evolve in the making process, which is often of a repetitive and precise nature. Certain decisions are made in advance; mathematical formulae and equations are used, not as a blueprint for the work, but as a starting point. This enables me to work instinctively, it also gives the work the freedom to grow and evolve into its own form.

I aim for the viewer to respond to the work formally and in respect of the materials used. The work has an evidently constructed appearance; nuts, bolts and rivets are clearly visible. These elements have an obvious functional role, but also give the work extra visual qualities.
